Two home runs, a timely sacrifice fly and solid pitching helped FIU continue its winning ways against the University of Miami, defeating the Hurricanes, 5-3, Wednesday night at FIU's newly-named ballpark -- Infinity Insurance Park.
The Panthers (6-6) have now won four of the last five games against the Hurricanes (5-7).
Diandre Amion's sacrifice fly off Daniel Federman (0-1) in the bottom of the sixth inning scored
Javier Valdes with the go-ahead run. Valdes, who doubled, broke a 3-3 tie when he touched home plate.
The Panthers added an insurance run in the eighth when
Eddie Silva doubled and Valdes singled him home with a high chopper over UM first baseman Alex Toral.
After taking three of four games from the Hurricanes last season, the Panthers started fast in the first of two meetings this season.
In the bottom of the first inning,
Logan Allen singled off UM starter Michael Mediavilla. Silva followed with a two-run home run that curved inside the left field foul pole. It was Silva's third home run in the last four games and his fourth of the season.
Jose Garcia hit his team-leading fifth home run of the season in the second inning. The solo shot to right made it 3-0 FIU.
FIU starter
Nick MacDonald pitched five innings, allowed two runs and struck out eight in his third solid start of the season. MacDonald has now struck out a team-leading 22 in 15 innings this season.
Reliever
Steven Casey (2-0) was just as good.
The Hurricanes tied the score at 3-3 off Casey in the sixth. Casey walked Michael Perez and allowed a double to Freddy Zamora to set runners at second and third base. One batter later, Casey uncorked a wild pitch allowing Perez to score the tying run.
Casey recovered to pitch four innings, allowing just one hit and striking out six batters to record his second win of the season.
FIU hits the road Friday to begin a stretch of six games in six days with the first three games to be played in the Snowbird Baseball Classic at Port Charlotte.
In their next game, the Panthers play against St. Joseph's at 4 p.m. Friday at North Charlotte Regional Park in Port Charlotte.
