MIAMI - The FIU Golden Panthers opened the 2010 season in impressive fashion by belting 14 hits and scoring 10 runs in a 10-3 victory over the Maryland Terrapins Friday night at the FIU Baseball Stadium.

"We feel like we've got more than nine guys to do the job out there," said Head Coach Turtle Thomas. "Throughout the order, everyone contributed in some way."

The Terrapins came out strong and silenced the crowd early when they jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the second inning on a couple of singles by UMD's Mike Rozak and Jack Cleary.

In the fifth inning, the bats came alive for the Golden Panthers as they roughed up starting pitcher Brett Harmon for four earned in the inning. Sophomore Pablo Bermudez got FIU on the board when he singled to right scoring junior Jose Behar and sophomore Garrett Wittels, who each singled earlier in the inning. After the Terrapins turned to Ian Schwalenberg out of the bullpen, sophomore Mike Martinez roped a double down the left field line on the first pitch to score senior Junior Arrojo. Sophomore Raiko Alfonso would later add a sacrifice fly to score Bermudez and give FIU a lead they would not relinquish for the rest of the game.

Bermudez finished the night going 2-4 with two runs and two RBI, adding his first career stolen base in the eighth inning.

The Golden Panthers opened up the game in the eighth when sophomore Jeremy Patton hit a pinch-hit double down the left field line to score Bermudez and senior Tim Jobe.

Senior Scott Rembisz tossed five solid innings giving up three run (two earned) on six hits and five strikeouts to earn his first victory of the season. Senior Eric Berkowitz and freshman Alberto Cardenas held Maryland to three hits and no runs over the final four innings to seal the game for FIU.

"Scott (Rembisz) is a great competitor," said Thomas. "He did a nice job of not getting rattled after giving up three runs. He regained his composure and got the job done.

"Our relievers also did a real nice job out there. Berkowitz and Cardenas came in and threw strikes and got ahead of a lot of hitters. They minimized their pitches and I thought they both did a nice job."

The Golden Panthers will return to the field on Saturday, Feb. 20 when Senior Corey Pollizano will take the mound against Maryland's Eric Potter. First pitch is scheduled for 6 p.m.
