MIAMI (www.fiusports.com) –  Tyler Towsend’s broken-bat RBI single in the ninth inning scored Chris Dunn and capped a wild final turn at the plate for Florida International in an 11-10 win against Boston College Tuesday night at University Park Stadium. The Golden Panthers rallied from a 9-3 deficit to improve to 10-6. Boston College dropped to 1-6 with its fifth one-run loss of the season.

The Golden Panthers scored four runs in the ninth to overcome a 10-7 deficit. Second baseman Corey Lozano led off the inning with a double to right center off B.C. relieve Dan Houston, who then hit Bryan Pullin to put men on first and second. First baseman Michael Belfiore took over for Houston and gave up a RBI single to James McOwen. Senior Luis Bautista followed with a single to left that would have only scored Pullin, but Eagles left fielder Jared McGuire overran the ball, which allowed McOwen to score and tie the game. Bautista reached second on the play and the speedy Dunn replaced him on the base paths. Dunn moved to third on a wild pitch and Townsend delivered the game-winning hit, splitting the infield and his bat up the middle.

FIU freshman Ryan Bernal (1-0) earned the win, throwing 2.1 innings of relief and giving up one run on three hits with three strikeouts. Senior starter Walker Whitley struck out six in 6.2 innings of work in the no-decision.

Belfiore (0-1) was charged with the loss, giving up two unearned runs on three hits.

McOwen went 4-for-5 with four RBI, a home run and three runs scored. Townsend finished the night 3-for-4 with three RBI and first baseman John Petika extended his hitting streak to 14 games, going 1-for-4.

Boston College’s 1-4 hitters kept FIU’s fielders busy going a combined 7-for-16 with eight RBI and six runs scored. Leadoff man Johnny Ayers was there from start to finish, scoring four runs with a double, home run and two RBI.

Johnny Ayers led off the game with a home run to put Boston College up 1-0.

Eagles starter Ted Ratliff retired the first six batters he faced before giving up a leadoff double to FIU’s Raimy Fuentes in the third. Fuentes moved to third on a wild pitch and scored on Brian Adams’ sac fly to center to even the score at 1-1.

B.C. scored three runs to take a 4-1 lead in the fifth. Johnny Ayers hit a two-out double down the left field line to score Tony Sanchez from second, advancing Belfiore to third in the process. Belfiore scored on a passed ball and Ayers came home from third when Bautista’s throw home hit Belfiore and rolled to the middle of the infield.

FIU pulled within one in the sixth. Pullin walked and moved to second on McOwen’s single through the right side. Townsend doubled to drive in both runners to put the score at 4-3.

The Eagles broke the game open in the seventh. Whitley gave up back-to-back two-out singles to Belfiore and Joseph Ayers before he was relieved by Corey Polizzano. Polizzano walked Johnny Ayers to load the bases and gave up a three-run single to Ryan Hutchinson that put B.C. up 7-3. McGuire followed with a RBI single to left-center to score Hutchinson for a five-run Eagles lead, ending Polizzano’s night.

Bernal spelled Polizzano and gave up a RBI double to Eric Campbell before striking out Jett Ruiz to end the inning with FIU trailing, 9-3.

FIU battled back with four runs in its half of the inning. Adams laid down a bunt single to score DePhillip Mason from third base and McOwen blasted a three-run shot to right field to cut the lead to 9-7.

Campbell knocked in Johnny Ayers with for B.C.’s final run of the game in the ninth inning.

FIU returns to action Friday night to play the opener of a three-game series against Rutgers at University Park Stadium. First pitch is set for 7 p.m.
