On the strength of a one-hit performance by their pitching staff, the FIU baseball team defeated the Ontario Blue Jays by the score of 1-0 Wednesday night at University Park.

FIU starter Scott Rembisz’ first frame couldn’t have gone much better as tossed three perfect innings, striking out two. Rembisz struck out the first batter of the game on three straight called strikes and then got the next two batters to ground out. Rembisz was helped in the first by a nice defensive play from third baseman Raiko Alfonzo who barehanded a bunt and tossed to first to get the runner.

The Golden Panthers got on the board first on an RBI groundout by Ryan Mollica. With Greg Waddell on third after hitting a double down the left field line and moving over on a wild pitch, Mollica hit a grounder between second and first to plate Waddell.

Justin Leith, who came on in relief of Rembisz to start the third, got himself into trouble by walking a batter and then throwing the ball away on a pickoff attempt. The error put a runner of third with one out, but Leith struck out the next batter and then induced a groundout to third to end the threat. Leith would toss two hitless innings while fanning three.

Neither squad would plate anymore runners as FIU went on to win 1-0.

R.J. Fondon and Eric Berkowitz finished off the game for FIU tossing two scoreless, allowing one hit and striking out four. The Golden Panthers’ hurlers retired the leadoff hitter in every inning and walked just one batter.
