Frosh Canady, Robertson Lead FIU at SBC Cross Country

Running on a wet and soggy course Saturday afternoon at the 2009 Sun Belt Conference Men's and Women's Cross Country Championships in Monroe, La., freshmen Tai Canady and Carter Robinson were the top female and male finishers for FIU among the 80-runner fields.

Canady, who has now been the Golden Panthers top female harrier in every race this fall, finished in 23rd place, running the 5K course University of Louisiana-Monroe course in 22:04.09.

WKU's Janet Jesang repeated as individual champion, and her third straight overall, in the women's race with a time of 19:09.83.  She led the Lady Toppers who finished with a total of 53 points in winning their fourth consecutive Cross Country Championship. Middle Tennessee took second place.

The Golden Panthers ended in 11th place as Catalina Ortiz finished 65th (24:17.19), Estefania Fierro came in 67th (24:54.11), Karina Edwards finished 73rd (27:37.57) and Ashley Aderman was 74th (29:13.28) individually.

Robertson's 8K time of 29:45.94 was good for 23rd place overall. Middle Tennessee, who had five runners finish in the top eleven of the men's race - led by Festus Chemaoi who finish second overall, topped the competition, ahead of South Alabama. The Jaguars' Zac Edwards crossed the finish line first on the muddy course with a time of 26:10.91.

FIU finished 10th on the men's side, with Sebastian Castillo coming in 25th place (19:01.76), Ciprian Mejia finishing 39th (29:51.29), Pedro Bigorra ending in 61st (30:58.35), Greg Wall finishing 62nd (31:06.74) and Jason Oliver coming in 71st (32:23.71).

WKU's Michelle Scott and Middle Tennessee's Dean Hayes were respectively chosen as the league's Women's and Men's Cross Country Coaches of the Year.

South Alabama took home both Freshman of the Year Awards with Alex Shields winning it for the men and Tori Lawson for the women.
