Miami, Fla. ( – FIU football Head Coach Ron Turner has announced the hiring of Steve Shankweiler and Tom Williams as assistant coaches with the Panthers. Shankweiler will serve as Offensive Line Coach and Run-Game Coordinator, while Williams will be Linebackers Coach.

“Steve Shankweiler is very well respected and regarded as one of the top offensive line coaches in the country,” said Turner.  “He is a master at teaching technique and fundamentals and will be very valuable in developing young offensive linemen.”

“I’ve known Tom (Williams) since his playing days at Stanford,” added Turner. “He was a standout player, who became a standout in the coaching profession. I know what type of personality and character he brings to the table. He is a student of the game (at linebacker), having taught the position for over 17 seasons. He is going to be a big asset to our young linebackers.”

Shankweiler is a veteran coach with 39 seasons of experience on the offensive side of the ball, primarily teaching offensive line. He has spent 30 years of his coaching career at the collegiate level, with another nine as a high school head coach.

In three seasons at USF under former head coach Skip Holtz, Shankweiler mentored several young offensive linemen into one of the BIG EAST’s top units on an annual basis. Despite losing three seniors from the 2010 squad, and shifting a guard to center, the Bulls would go onto to rank 35th nationally and first in the BIG EAST in both rushing offense and sacks allowed in 2011.

Coaching on winning teams has been prevalent throughout the majority of Shankweiler’s career. In three stints at East Carolina, he was a part of seven bowl appearances, which included the Pirates' historical run in 1991 that resulted in a Peach Bowl win over N.C. State and the revitalization of the program that included a Bowl showing in 2006, a victory over No. 24 Boise State in the 2007 Sheraton Hawaii Bowl and Conference USA titles in 2008 and 2009.

Williams brings 20 years of coaching experience to FIU football and is widely known as a top linebackers coach. Prior to spending the 2012 season at the University of Texas at El Paso (UTEP) as a defensive secondary coach under Mike Price he was head coach at Yale from 2009-11.

Williams has coached at every level collegiately and professionally, with 16 years of collegiate coaching experience, a two-year stint as a defensive assistant for the NFL's Jacksonville Jaguars and one season with the Fujitsu Frontiers of Japan League Division I.

During his tenure at Yale, Williams guided the Bulldogs to a record of 16-14 over three seasons.
