Tyler Alexander threw a four-hit shutout and matched a career-high with 10 strikeouts to lead FIU past Arkansas State, 1-0, in the opening game of a three-game series at the FIU Baseball Stadium on Friday night.
Alexander (2-3) retired the first batter in eight of the nine innings he pitched and escaped a one-out jam in the ninth to preserve the shutout for the Panthers (13-12, 3-4 Sun Belt).
After Logan Uxa walked with one out in the top of the ninth, Ryan Roberts singled to right on an 0-2 pitch to put runners at first and second base for the Red Wolves (16-11, 4-3 SBC). However, Alexander proceeded to strike out Austin Baker looking and got
Alex Potts to fly out to Nathan Burns in right to end the game.
Aramis Garcia gave Alexander all the offense he would need. Garcia belted his team-leading fifth home run of the season to left in the fourth inning off ASU starter Daniel Wright (2-2). Garcia also leads the Panthers with 23 RBI.
Julius Gaines and Oscar Aguirre each went 2 for 3 for FIU.
The Panthers and Red Wolves square off in game two of the series Saturday afternoon at 4 p.m. at the FIU Baseball Stadium.
