Panthers Drop Series Finale to No. 8 Ole Miss, 8-1

FIU fell to No. 8 Ole Miss, 8-1, on Sunday in the finale of a three-game weekend series. The Panthers are now 7-5. The Rebels improve to 11-1.

Ole Miss scored its runs in four-consecutive innings from the fourth through the seventh innings. Stuart Turner hit a two-out RBI triple to open the Rebels scoring in the fourth. Andrew Mistone followed with an RBI double off FIU starter Mike Franco (1-1).

The Panthers scored their run in the bottom of the fifth. Roche Woodard singled and came around to score on an error when Ole Miss first baseman Sikes Orvis overthrew pitcher Sam Smith covering first base on Edwin Rios’ ground ball.

Julius Gaines led the Panthers going 3 for 4 to raise his team-leading batting average to .457. Aramis Garcia was 2 for 4.

FIU returns to the diamond Wednesday at Stetson for a mid-week game. First pitch is at 6:30 p.m. from Deland, Fla. The Panthers' next home series begins Friday, March 8 at 6 p.m. when No. 13 Rice visits FIU for a three-game weekend set.
