Four years ago, Mario Cristobal inherited a monumental challenge when he became FIU Football's second head coach. The program was wracked with NCAA sanctions, scholarship losses, played in a high school stadium, had very limited football facilities and racquetball courts for a weight room.
As FIU Football enters its 10th season of play with the opening of training camp this afternoon, the Panthers are no longer dealing with NCAA sanctions, have all their scholarships restored, play in a new FIU Stadium, work in a new fieldhouse and train in a spacious brand new weight room.
Under MC's watch, the recruiting has improved ten-fold, there's been a complete turnaround in the Panthers' discipline and work ethic, the team's academics have soared and most importantly, FIU is the defending Sun Belt Champion and reached and won its first bowl game last season. For all this MC, the 2010 Sun Belt Conference Coach of the Year, got a well-deserved new 5-year contract late Tuesday night. The new deal will keep MC at FIU through the 2016 season.

Congratulations to MC! Looking forward to him making us Top 25 program.
Good news indeed, congrats to coach MC.
Pete,Thanks for working out the contract....just like I demanded yesterday....lolCongrats to Coach Cristobal, now its time to do what no other Sunbelt team has ever done, not even 5_time trophy share holder Troy. Its time to win it outright & take it to the OOC teams. You've created a legacy here as a builder! Now its time to be a winner and not just in the "belt".Go get them PANTHERS!
Finally Mario! A 5 year contract... here we go. Now work for every one of those dollars and defend that championship!
Woohooo great news to start the day....now on to the opening of training camp!!! Go Panthers!!!
There you go! A well deserved extension of the contract that clears the way to focus on continuing the development and program-building MC has achieved to date.Good job by the university, staff, PG, and MC as well.Congrats Mario!Go FIU!!
Coincidentally, comes right before our game against the same team when it all turned around...Very encouraging.
Thank You MC...oye pasa por la seccion 112 por una soda fria!!!
The herald posted some of the financials on their blog and wow.... Considering the twit's that created a frenzy last week about UNC and all that stuff... it seems as if both sides FIU&MC got really good deal going.
MC has security for 5 years, got additional funding for his assistants (well deserved on Ponce and Maribal amongst others), didn't break the bank and if my math is correct by year 5, he'd be just under 600K, which is the price tag I was afraid, we'd start with (base salary).
Thanks Mario, Pete Garcia, & Pres... for making this a great deal.
BTW, it should of broken here on THE PROWL...!!!
1. Congrats Coach Cristobal.2. Lol@Chia3. Now we have to work on Pelegrin's contract. He needs a 20 year extension. We don't want to lose HIM to North Carolina.
We got enough FIU alums in the Tar Heel state. I think we can safely say that. :)
I don't want to lose PP to the Herald. They haven't had good FIU coverage since....well.....since PP was the janitor, secretary, personal assistant to Beasley, or what ever they claim his title was....Bottom line is MC's contract should of been Pete's moment and his article! Instead I had to read about some ones familly issue and wait 'till noon for lead coverage! We need coverage, PP needs a contract that will allow him to explore other media...maybe some fiu football sideline reporter....get some time with Sanchez...Pete's a walking encyclopedia, who better to do extra color. Pete, how bout taking over the Becon...we'll call it the Pecon!..lol
Well... Pete's more a print guy than a broadcast guy... but speaking as a broadcast guy, I think PP would probably make a pretty good color analyst. Especially with how much he knows FIU.
Sideline's also a thought, and I think he'd be good at it, but something tells me Petey would prefer staying in the press box. Maybe move RS to the sideline and have PP in the box with Calatayud? ;)
On second thought, Pete's got a face for Radio...
PP is 5 ft nothing, 100 lbs nothing..
Is PP FIUs answer to Zagacki? HHHHMMMM
