The Golden Panthers plated four two-out runs in the bottom of the first to jump ahead early. After two quick outs, Mike Martinez laced a ball over the left fielder's head for a double. Tim Jobe then drove in the first run of the game with a broken-bat single to left. Raiko Alfonso followed with a double of his own to drive in Jobe all the way from first, making the score 2-0. Garrett Wittels was up next, and he doubled down the left field line to push another run across. Lammar Guy completed the scoring for FIU, driving in Wittels with a single to left.
In the bottom of the third, Jobe put another run on the board with a blast to left that hit off the top of the scoreboard.
FIU added four more in the bottom of the fourth, the first one coming on double by Sean Reilly and a single by Miami Dade College transfer Yoandy Barroso to drive in the FIU backstop. Jeremy Patton followed by ripping a double off the top of the right field wall, plating Barroso all the way from first and making the FIU lead 7-0. Tim Jobe capped off the scoring in the inning as he hit his second homer of the night, this a towering shot to left to plate two more and make the score 9-0.
After British Columbia plated four in the top of the fifth, FIU responded in their half of the inning with three of their own. The first two came off the bat of freshman Rudy Flores who drove a ball over the head of the left fielder for a double that drove in Reilly and Doug Joyce. After Flores took third on an error, Barroso drove him in with a single to center.
Jose Behar, another transfer from Miami Dade, drove in two more in the bottom of the fifth as a part of a three-run inning for FIU that made the score 17-4.
R.J. Fondon started for FIU and picked up the win, tossing three scoreless innings. Aaron Arboleya looked dominant out of the pen, striking out the side in the top of the seventh inning. Tim Jobe finished the game 3-5 with two homers and four driven in. Garrett Wittels had a pair of doubles in the game and also pitched a perfect ninth inning to close out the game.
FIU will open its regular season on February 19, 2010 as they host a three-game set against the Maryland Terrapins.
